Working in the Plumbing Service Industry

The plumbing business is one of those industries that enjoys a kind of natural job security. As long as there are sinks, drains and toilets, homeowners and businesses are going to need plumbers. It's not the kind of repair one can put off for very long. The Department of Labor lists the job prospects for plumbers as excellent.

What a Plumber Does

Plumbers install and repair pipes, drains and pretty much anything that has to do with the water delivery system to homes and businesses. Employment opportunities range from working at water treatment plants to employment with companies that services residences and/or businesses to working for oneself as an independent contractor.

Skills Needed in Plumbing Service Industry

A plumber needs to be proficient in fitting and sealing pipes and installing kitchen and bathroom plumbing fixtures. He or she needs to be able to work independently as most plumbing jobs require only one person. A plumber also needs to be able to quickly diagnose a plumbing problem and devise a solution without a lot of outside help.

A plumber needs to be reasonable physically fit as this job requires lifting and transporting heavy fixtures as well as a significant amount of kneeling and standing.

Interpersonal communication skills are a plus for a plumber. Whether a person works for a plumbing service company or strikes out on his or her own, a plumber will need to be able to communicate the problem to the homeowner or business owner and often deal with people when they are stressed.

Training to Be a Plumber

It takes time to learn the plumbing trade. Most plumbers start with a training course at a technical school or community college. These courses focus on such things as reading blueprints, drafting, building codes and safety regulations. Courses also include practical experience working with pipes and installing water heaters, sinks and other fixtures. The training usually ends with an apprenticeship working alongside an established plumber. The entire process can take four to five years. The US armed forces also provides plumbing training.

If you are a plumber looking for a better opportunity, consider a Mr. Rooter plumbing franchise. A leader in the plumbing service industry, Mr. Rooter has been in business since 1974 and has 300 locations in the United States, Canada and Europe.
