Ron Rice - Edmonds, Washington
How far can hard work, following a proven system and good customer service take your business? Pretty far, according to Ron Rice. 10 years ago, he wouldn’t have guessed he would own a successful appliance repair store some day. He was trained as an electronic technician in the military and spent years repairing computers and electronic systems for local schools.
Then he and his wife moved to Seattle and experienced a chain of events that brought them to the appliance industry – and eventually Mr. Appliance. His new business took off immediately, and doubled in size and profit every year for the first four years. Rice now has six active technicians, two in training, and has been in the top 10 percent of all Mr. Appliance owners for the past four years in a row.
Why did you decide to invest in a Mr. Appliance franchise?
I bought the franchise because I didn’t want to reinvent the wheel. Instead of me trying to figure out from scratch what I would need, Mr. Appliance had everything shrink-wrapped for me. All I had to do was follow the manual.
What is the biggest benefit of owning a Mr.
Appliance franchise?
The biggest benefit is the growth that you can see in a short period of time. Eventually you do see profit. Instead of struggling with a flat market, it’s always growing. There’s potential for big growth, and you’re able to manage the growth with good systems.
What advice would you give to a new appliance repair entrepreneur?
Personally, I attribute the growth of my company from zero to where I am today to doing factory and warranty calls. It’s the cheapest way to capture a new customer. If you do a good job the first time, you’re getting a second and third call and building a loyal customer.
The first year I was in business we did a lot of warranty and didn’t make a lot of money right away – now I’m reaping the benefits. The factory has recommended you, so that validates your company in the eyes of your customers. We impress them and then say, “Call us next time you have an appliance problem. Here’s my card. We’re the factory-authorized experts in your area.” They’ll be a loyal customer to you for life.
How is life outside the office different now?
The last two years have been more relaxed. I have more free time now, so I can come in late and leave early. I’ve got a really great staff. My service manager and office manager run the place when I’m not there and do a great job. The people who work for me seem to be pretty loyal, so I’m thankful for that.
I also like to play hockey, so I have an opportunity to do that more often now. If I have a late-night game I can sleep in and come in a little late. I’m also able to sponsor a Mr. Appliance team for hockey tournaments. I sponsor part of the tournament fees and have a full set of Mr. Appliance hockey jerseys made up with logos on them. It’s a good way to get our name out there, but it’s also a lot of fun for me to be able to help people in my community and do something I really enjoy.
