Scott Stewart - Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania
Scott Stewart is living proof that trusting proven systems and treating others well translates into business success. Less than two years ago, Scott was working for a health care company doing in-house user support and development programming. He and his wife, Jeanette, decided it was time to leave the corporate world behind. They knew they wanted to invest in a franchise to take advantage of the support and systems, but they didn’t know where to turn. After some research, they decided on Mr. Appliance. Scott says it’s hard work building a budding business – and it’s that drive and perseverance that has made their business successful. Scott and Jeanette’s franchise has seen impressive growth in size and revenue since they opened, and the future only looks brighter.
Why did you decide to invest in a Mr. Appliance franchise?
I was impressed with the availability of territory in my area and the company’s ability to be recession-proof. We’re pretty pleased with what we’ve seen. The industry is strong. You can cut back on your landscaper or choose not to have a contractor, but appliances are becoming less of a convenience and more of a necessity. People are doing more things at home, and they really can’t afford to have a broken appliance.
How has Mr. Appliance molded the way you conduct business?
All companies under The Dwyer Group – the parent company of Mr. Appliance – operate by the same Code of Values based on respect, integrity, customer focus and having fun in the process. Prior to learning about the Code of Values, I probably wouldn’t have thought it would be important to operate your business based on a moral code. I always thought it was kill or be killed, at least in the corporate world. However, you can see that as you begin to do the right thing by your employees and by your customers, it’s going to come back to you. Maybe it doesn’t happen immediately, but somewhere down the line those good actions are going to pay you back.
What advice would you give a new entrepreneur?
Make sure you really think about what you’re investing in and have a plan for the costs and all of the other little things that come with owning a new business. It’s very rewarding to own your own business, but it is important to focus and make sure you’re prepared.
What is the biggest benefit of owning a Mr. Appliance franchise?
The hours are still long, the work is still hard, but there is satisfaction at the end of the day that I didn’t get working in the corporate world. I know that the work I’m doing is mine. I’m not working these hours for someone else’s goals and getting no appreciation for it. What I’m working for is to build a strong company for myself and for my family.
