Colt Easley - Denver, Colorado
Since his dad opened their first electrical business over twenty-five years ago, Colt Easley can honestly say he’s been in the industry all his life. When his father, Paul, decided to diversify the family business to include residential service, he opened a Mr. Electric franchise and asked Colt to manage the store. Here, Colt talks about his experience.
What’s it been like since first opening your Mr. Electric?
We’ve owned Mr. Electric of Denver for about two years now. When we opened, we had one van. Now we have three and will have a fourth within a month. Things are going very well, and we’re heading toward at least ten vans in the future. What excites me most about Mr. Electric is all the opportunity for growth. That’s why I’m really glad to be working on the residential service side of things, as opposed to the commercial end.
Have there been any unexpected benefits of opening a Mr. Electric franchise?
I am a huge fan of Mr. Electric’s national relationship with The Home Depot. In our market, we’re blessed to have a lot of The Home Depot stores, so it’s really helped us in terms of name recognition.
When someone makes a residential electrical purchase with The Home Depot, they are referred to us to install it. If they decide to go with us, Home Depot faxes us a P.O., we contact the home owner to set an appointment, and then complete the job for them.
It’s free advertising for us, and we’ve already had multiple repeat customers just from The Home Depot referrals. They’re so impressed by our work when we install their ceiling fan, that they ask us to then install their generator, or finish their basement, etc.
What would you like to say to independent electrical contractors out there who may be looking to take their business to the next level?
Having corporate support is great. Knowing that a company [like Mr. Electric] is behind you all the way makes all the difference in the world. Also, having the Mr. Electric business systems to follow is a huge help. If you follow the systems, it [the business] really will work. I strongly believe that.
