John and Lois Proffitt - Richmond, Virginia
By the time John Proffitt was 21 years old he had turned his family chores into a career. John is a third generation plumber, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Plumbing continues to be a family affair for John. He and his wife Lois co-own a Mr. Rooter franchise in Richmond, Va.
Why did you invest in a Mr. Rooter franchise?
My wife and I discussed getting into the service side of plumbing as a backup to our commercial business. I was impressed with the equipment and work of Mr. Rooter. After attending a Mr. Rooter annual conference we were blown away with the people and their willingness to help. That trip alone convinced us to buy a Mr. Rooter franchise.
What is the biggest benefit of owning and operating a Mr. Rooter franchise?
The biggest benefit is the Mr. Rooter franchise community. When going through different situations, the ability to network with other Mr. Rooter franchisees is priceless. Sometimes it helps to just talk with other owners. We also have excellent opportunity for growth and great ways to check the profitability and production of everyone involved. We believe in the team approach, and this is the perfect vehicle to provide success.
How has your business changed since you became a franchise owner?
Since I was first introduced to plumbing I have enjoyed dealing with people. I enjoy being able to help customers find solutions to their problems and work with them to correct the negative situations. My Mr. Rooter franchise allows me to have more time to spend doing what matters most, building relationships with customers and employees.
What do you see in the future for your franchise?
Our business is coming along nicely. I see a steady and prosperous increase in sales over the next few years as we continue to grow our customer base and build our repeat customers. I see lots of potential advancement for the staff now in place. I have a vision of opportunity advancement for everyone involved in our business; we are by no means limited to an hourly salary.
