Steve Kaldis and Patrick O’Connor were working at the Mr. Rooter Plumbing franchise when the owner decided to close in 1997. Faced with a crossroad, they decided to give ownership a try, and they haven’t looked back. Serving a territory with a territory of more than one million people, Steve and Patrick have grown the business from a two-truck operation to 24 trucks. These technicians-turned-owners have enjoyed the challenges and rewards that come from being the decision makers
Why did you invest in a Mr. Rooter franchise?
Steve: Having worked as a technician I was well aware of what a strong franchise Mr. Rooter Plumbing was. When the opportunity arose it seemed like a good career move for Patrick and me. The Mr. Rooter corporate staff offered a lot of support, and the existing franchisees were a great help.
What is the biggest benefit of owning and operating a Mr. Rooter franchise?
Steve: Being your own boss has intrinsic rewards as you are able to structure things in accordance with your outlook and be consistent with your values. You can work hard and lead a more balanced life.
How is owning your Mr. Rooter franchise different from the other positions you have held?
Steve: Owning a Mr. Rooter shop calls for a greater level of core competencies where I am put to the test in many different ways and areas. This is often challenging but allows for personal growth and can be much more rewarding.
What do you see in the future for your franchise?
Steve: I see continued growth for our business in the coming years. As the population grows we have managed to have above average growth in sales. As award winners for three years in a row, I hope to continue to meet and exceed our personal and financial goals with this business.
