Franchise Opportunies With The Dwyer Group: Building a Business that Puts Life First

Finding time for life outside of work isn’t always easy. Glenn Gallas makes sure that happens.

You’d never know that Mr. Rooter franchise owner, Glenn Gallas was a skeptical prospective franchisee. As someone who values his faith and family above all else, Gallas was concerned that becoming a business owner would take precious time away from those priorities. However, after a visit to The Dwyer Group headquarters in Waco, Texas, convinced him that the company had similar values, Gallas joined the ranks of Mr. Rooter franchisees and has never looked back.

Today, he is the owner of two franchises associated with The Dwyer Group—Mr. Rooter of central Arkansas and Mr. Electric of Hot Springs. Between the two, Gallas employs 31 people, including his first five employees who were hired more than five years ago. With average turnover at a rate of 18 percent annually, according to the Society for Human Resource Managers, that kind of retention is nothing short of astounding. However, the reasons become clear once Gallas starts to talk about how his commitment to balancing personal and professional priorities trickles down to his employees.

“In plumbing companies, there is usually no future,” he explains. “The people who reaped the benefits were the owners. When I started the business, my No. 1 priority was to create a place where my plumbers and electricians would retire from.”

Toward that end, his franchise pays his employees better than the industry average, and offers medical and dental insurance, paid holidays and vacations, and retirement benefits with a matching contribution program. And he expects them to have a life.

“The average guy is working 42 hours a week,” he says. “There are opportunities to work more, but we really want them to spend time doing the things that are important to them.”

And Gallas leads by example. He’s created a strict policy of faith and family first, and his success has enabled him to help his church found Champion Baptist College in Hot Springs, where his daughter has just completed her freshman year. He also plans to finance a new church in India, hoping to spread the faith he holds so dear.

“When I left the company that I was working with [before coming to The Dwyer Group], I only had two weeks of vacation after eight years, and that didn’t mean that if I had the time I would have the money to take that vacation,” he recalls. “Now, I take at least one week a month to spend time on things that are important to me. The Mr. Rooter systems have helped me build a company around systems instead of myself—that allows me the freedom to have a better quality of life. I encourage my employees to set priorities for themselves, and [I] work to give them a way to make those priorities happen.”
