10 Ways to Combat Winter Heating Costs

WACO, Texas (Oct. 29, 2008) – As winter approaches, many households can expect their energy bills to rise right along with natural gas and fuel prices. Now is a good time to prevent the unwanted winter chill and reduce your next bill.

“The average homeowner spends nearly $2000 in energy costs every year,” said Doyle James, president of Aire Serv Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. “Now that the Energy Department is predicting higher heating costs this winter, it’s important to learn how to maintain your heating equipment and increase its system performance to save energy and money. Everything from changing air filters and insulating air ducts to determining if it’s time to replace an old system can help reduce winter heating costs.”

To keep your heating system in excellent condition this winter, follow these tips by Aire Serv:
• Look for drafty windows and door frames. Check the caulking and add new weather stripping as necessary – air leaks can cause the loss of heat, energy and money.
• Identify problems early with a seasonal check-up by your heating and cooling contractor. Dirt and neglect are the main cause for AC and heating system failures.
• Open your south-facing window blinds and curtains to let the sun in and reduce the load on your heating system. Then close them at night to reduce the winter chill.
• Check the filters monthly and replace as necessary.
• Insulate the air ducts. Proper insulation will keep moisture out of the house and prevent the heated air from escaping into unheated spaces such as the attic or crawlspace.
• Keep heat-generated appliances like TVs and computer equipment away from thermostats.
• Reverse ceiling fans. By switching the blade’s direction, warmer air that’s accumulated near the ceiling will be pushed back down.

Other tips…
• Install a programmable thermostat. This “smart thermostat” can turn on the heater to the desired set point one hour before you arrive, avoiding the need to run the system all day.
• When your heating professional performs a winter tune-up, have a seasonal safety check too.
• If your air conditioner is outdated, you’ll save money by upgrading. Energy Star®-rated units can save homeowners up to 16 percent on electricity bills and reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted.
