Back-to-School Savings Start at Home
WACO, Texas (Sept. 4, 2008) – Now that schools are filling up again and many homes are empty most of the day, don’t forget to change your thermostat settings to save energy and money.
“The average household spends more than $2000 a year on energy bills. Half of that goes to heating and cooling,” said Doyle James, president of Aire Serv Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. “Over the summer, kids probably kept the A/C cranked up while they stayed indoors to avoid the heat. Now that they have a regular routine at school, parents can adjust the programmable thermostat for when their family is away to lower heating and cooling bills up to 20 percent.”
Many homeowners are unaware that more energy is used if they override the pre-programmed settings such as hold, permanent, vacation and temporary. Drastically overriding these settings will not cool your home any faster and can cause your system to work harder. This wastes energy and money.
Aire Serv recommends following these tips for saving money on energy bills:
• Use programmable thermostats to change the temperature in certain areas of your home throughout the day, such as raising the temperature when everyone is out of the house.
• When using a manual thermostat, adjust the temperature 5 to 8 degrees warmer if you’ll be gone for several hours and 4 degrees warmer when asleep.
• If your thermostat uses batteries, don’t forget to change the batteries each year.
• Set your ceiling fan to the counter-clockwise direction to create a wind-chill effect, and turn off the ceiling fan when you leave a room.
• Keep window coverings closed during the day to prevent the sun from warming your home
too much.
