What Can a Blog do for your Small Business?

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

First of all, what is a blog?

A blog is a type of journal arranged online in the form of a web page, typically linked or included in the main web page of a site.

There are many types of blogs, but for this, we will focus on differentiating between two: Personal and Business blogs.

Personal blogs can have a vast range of topics, posts and links. They can be personal, opinionative, political, etc.

Business blogs can be an amazing social tool for communicating with customers and employees in order to share knowledge and build a customer following. They are about seeming impersonal while connecting with potential customers and building web traffic on your site.

Another great thing about blogs…They are completely traceable! You can measure your success, your website’s success, your business’ success; the list can go on.

  • Why do I want a blog for my small business?
  • Superb question! First of all, why not? Blogs are absolutely simple!
  • The software is far easier to manage than what it used to be. Beyond that, most small businesses have a Facebook. Included in that profile is a blog! Simply write in it, link your thoughts to resources or further reading, and publish! That blog will be available for all of your friends to see!
  • Don’t have a Facebook, and don’t want one?(First of all, shame on you! Free advertising and a way to get customer feedback, free of charge? Don’t pass that up!)
  • There are other options, besides Facebook, believe it or not. Blogger.com, Movable Type, Typepad, these all offer simple ways to get started!
  • Blogging offers you not only a free to low-cost way to get advertisement, web presence and customer feedback, but it also is an inexpensive alternative to learning html, hiring a web designer.
  • Making the commitment to blog at least 2-3 times a week is highly accomplishable for many. Find a topic that relates to your audience. It doesn’t always have to be solely about you! For example, perhaps an electric company wishes to post a blog. A rational topic could be how to cut back on that electricity bill, how to rewire something, the possibilities are endless!

Finally, business blogs allow your small business a chance to get a vast web presence and share your expertise. It can be a powerful tool in gaining customer trust and assurance, while establishing your name!

How to Care for your Lawn (and Know When to Call The Grounds Guys!)

Friday, September 24th, 2010

For many people, landscaping serves to boost up the aesthetic appeal of one’s home to others, particularly when it comes to attracting homeowners or tenants, increasing property values.

Some prefer a simple lawn, requiring little to no care beyond a sprinkler treatment here and there. However, for those who enjoy gardening, pruning, mowing and sprucing their lawn, we hope the following information can be of service!

When asked what Top 5 Tips he would suggest to a client about landscape and lawn care, Frank Myrland of The Grounds Guys Canada, offered up these suggestions:

1) Herbicide can be dangerous to the environment and your soil. Horticultural Vinegar, an organic alternative, is quite different from the regular vinegar that you’ll find in the kitchen.

Cooking vinegar contains no more than 5% acetic acid, which makes it harmless to weeds for the most part. Horticultural Vinegar contains more acetic acid, which allows it to penetrate into the root system of weeds and kill them.

Horticultural Vinegar can still damage grasses and flowers, however, so it must be used cautiously so that there isn’t any collateral damage. Take care to spray with direction, and pay close attention to a potential runoff into other plants. You can find Horticultural Vinegars available with different strengths.

Remember that since it contains acid, it can be dangerous if handled incorrectly. If you decide to use Horticultural Vinegar, make sure you read the label first.

2) Do you have grand visions of what your yard could be this summer? Do you dream of vibrant gardens with neatly edged garden beds, perfectly pruned hedges? Where do you start?

When we start gardening or landscaping, many of us forget the importance of planning ahead. Buying flowers and equipment without taking to time to figure things out first certainly could work out, but who really wants to take that chance?

Make good use of the information available. Internet resources or employees of local garden centers can help you figure out how to fill out your garden. You can talk to landscaping service companies as well if you are looking for the best possible end result.

Take note of the space you have to work with. Plan out where your new landscape features or objects will go. Set a deadline for finishing planting so you don’t keep putting it off. Set a schedule for watering, raking, edging or maintaining your gardens. Remember that spending half-an-hour to construct a good plan now can save you hours of work trying to salvage your garden later on.

3) Any time is a good time to sharpen your lawn mower blades. This is a job that some of us find easy to put off, but the effect of dull blades can quickly be seen on a lawn. A ragged, uneven cut isn’t the first thing you want visitors to be greeted with at your house.

There are many different gardening centers and hardware stores that will sharpen your lawn mower blades. Take the time to get it done and you will be glad you did later!

4) Plants grow and die, depending on the season they are most compatible with, as well as their life span. Be sure that when you plan your garden, each flower, bush or tree works best with the upcoming season.

For less maintenance, go for a perennial plant. Typically, these grow and bloom over the spring and summer, then die back each autumn and winter. They also live typically for more than two years, which makes less of a hassle to replant so often.

5) Have you ever considered a backyard pond? Building your own pond, or having a landscape crew build one for you, is something you may never have considered before. There are many reasons why you might want to take the time to think about it now.

With a vibrant looking design and well-manicured surrounding landscape, a backyard pond adds a touch of beauty. A pond will attract birds, butterflies and crickets and can be filled with fish. It obviously depends on size, but most ponds don’t take very long to make at all. You can do it yourself if you fancy yourself to be a clever landscaper. Simply use a tarp to line the pond and a hose and pump to supply the water.

You can also hire a landscaping company to do it for you, to ensure that the job is done professionally and exactly how you want it. If you haven’t spent any time thinking about what a backyard pond would add to your property, now is the time.

Aside from all of these fun tips, The Grounds Guys want you to contact them now. Let them put their knowledge and experience to work for you. They offer weekly services for those who find it hard to spare time to their lawn, including:

  • Mowing
  • Line trimming of beds, fence lines, foundations and trees

  • Blowing clippings and leaves from all walks, drives, patios and decks
  • Garden care
  • Landscape enhancements

On top of that, they also offer comprehensive landscape management services for multi-residential yard care.

Leading to Serve and Serving to Lead

Friday, September 17th, 2010

In an interview with Axiom News, CEO and Chairperson Dina Dwyer-Owens proves that The Dwyer Group’s 14 values contribute to the company’s success. When she would meet with potential investors, she would spend the majority of the time discussing the leadership approach she sees the most value in; the approach which involves serving people, including the staff, as the company’s top priority. Only after that was understood would she turn to talking shop and numbers.

In response to why she does this, Dwyer-Owens would respond by saying that if a company puts its emphasis on its people, then profits will follow.

The Waco, Texas-centered company’s success is proof of this principle. Year after year it experiences growth, aside from the last three years in which it has maintained “flat growth” even through the recession.  Dwyer-Owens says she links the recognition of being one of the best companies to work for in Texas (in Texas Monthly 3 years in a row!) to the company’s commitment to a servant leadership mindset.

“We’re certainly in the business to make money…At the end of the day, that’s the purpose of any business,” said Dwyer-Owens, “but our mission is not to make money. [It] is to teach our principles and systems [for] personal and business success so that all people we touch will live happier, more successful lives . . . and that’s why we get up and do what we do every day. We want to make a positive difference in people’s lives, and franchising just happens to be the vehicle we use.”

The Dwyer Group was founded in 1981 by Don Dwyer, with its first holding being Rainbow International. In 1994, when he passed away, daughter Dwyer-Owens first served as the executive vice-president until she was promoted a couple of years later.

Now, nearly three decades after it was founded, The Dwyer Group is the holder of seven service-based franchises. The group provides service to over 1,250 franchises in the United States and Canada, and also more than 300 franchise locations internationally.

How to Maintain your Bathroom (and Know When to Call Mr. Rooter!)

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

While we all know that Mr. Rooter offers an extensive array of assistance ranging from full service plumbing around the house to drain and sewer service; however, this economy is turning everyone into a plumber!

We at The Dwyer Group definitely encourage our customers to be certain a professional is necessary, but at the same time we would like to offer a few suggestions on Do-It-Yourself repair around the house. So with no further ado, here are our Top Five Tips for your Bathroom:

1) To begin, try routinely cleaning your drains and pipes! Don’t wait until your water begins to back up and thus stain your sink. There are many unclogging solutions out there in a variety of forms; from eco-friendly to home remedies like three Alka-Seltzer tablets and white vinegar. You can also be more aggressive by using a hanger to pull up what is clogging drains which is more than likely hair.

2) As a house settles, or the weather begins to affect your foundation, you will notice fine lines appearing in the grouted tiles of your floor or shower walls. Remove about an eighth of an inch from your grout and apply a fresh layer. (This is also a chance to change that color you have been getting tired of!)  Mold is also a common resident of grout. After applying fresh grout, be sure to use a grout sealer to prevent any more molds from growing!

3) Does that leaky faucet keep you up all night? We can help you get a higher quality of sleep! Check and see whether the water is hot or cold.  After you do that, turn off both water supplies, typically in the cabinet under your sink. Next, take off the knob for the side that is leaking and unscrew the valve stem. Check that washer that is located at the base of the stem (and possibly replace it if it’s in bad shape). Make sure to put all of the components back where they came from. Finally, turn your water supply on (don’t forget that!) and check to see if you are still leaking!

4) Running toilets can not only boost up your water bill, but they can also add to the goop that piles up around the toilet bowl faster. If your toilet is constantly running, it’s typically indicating that your flapper is worn or not seated correctly. Take off your tank cover and replace the flapper with a new one, if necessary. Before you do that, though, sand off some of that build-up around the flapper’s resting spot!

5) Caulking! This silicone-based substance is not permanent. Actually, it will eventually begin to look and smell awful, possibly even chip off. If you notice your tub’s caulk begin to wear away a bit, you should just go ahead and replace the caulk throughout the rest of the bathroom. Take off all of the excess old caulk that you can and clean up the surface before you apply new caulk, so it will last longer!

Mr. Electric Gets a Glowing Review!

Monday, September 13th, 2010

One of the greatest compliments a Dwyer Group franchisee and their company can receive is a satisfied customer. It’s an added bonus when that customer sings our praises through her community of mothers and house-owners, in order to ensure they receive the same fantastic service.

Below is an excerpt from a website called Regina Moms, where topics range from contractors to how-to’s on getting the most for your money. The Dwyer Group is proud to post this and even more proud of its valued employee, Mitchell Lazorko.

“We are so, so, so impressed with Mr. Electric so far! I was booked for someone to come on Thursday between 1-2. I ended up getting in for a massage on a cancellation for 2pm, so I called to see if I should reschedule or if whoever was coming could be here closer to 1. First of all, the receptionist is fantastic and super friendly. She told me she could have someone here in 1/2 hour. She then called me back to tell me who would be coming and that he was just leaving the shop and would be arriving shortly. Who does that???? I was impressed right away.

Mitchell showed up shortly after and was just great. He was very friendly and he even had a coloring book for Ava . She was over the moon. He had a little door mat, put covers over his shoes…I was in shock. We’ve been dealing with a lot of difference companies and contractors over the past few weeks and NO ONE has done that.

The quote ended up being close to another but we WILL be going with Mr. Electric hands down without giving anyone a second thought. My husband came home at lunch because it was Olivia’s first day of school and was able to talk to Mitchell as well. He just said, “We’re going with them no matter what”.

So there is the feedback to date. Please pass on our compliments to your husband and his staff.

I’m sure the work that is being done will be done well, too.
Mitch is booked in today and is doing the job as I type this!”

Mr. Electric strives for professionalism and perfection in its service to its residential and commercial customers. Each company ensures that the job is done correctly the first time and that they treat the family and property with the utmost respect and attention. In short, they have the power to make things better!

From Mr. Banker to Mr. Appliance

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Eric Feder, a 55-year-old former banker, decided to open up his own Mr. Appliance franchise after years of finding finances for someone else’s business.

“For several years, I underwrote loans for small businesses, but opening my own business has been a dream of mine,” Feder said.

After 21 long years as a financier and banker, he began searching for new career opportunities. Because he was an Air Force Academy graduate, he was invited to the Service Academy Career Conference in San Diego last year. It was there he saw The Dwyer Group booth and seized the opportunity to invest.

The new franchise business in San Gabriel Valley will benefit from Feder’s number-crunching skills and professionalism. Feder has also passed the certified public accountants exam and is a chartered financial analyst. These years of training in finances gave Feder the confidence to open his own business.

Not long after purchasing the franchise, Feder attended a training course on customer service techniques and the latest technology. Soon after that, he hired Daniel Estevez, a service technician who has more than 27 years of experience under his belt. Despite the focus on professionalism, Feder hopes to add an amiable touch to his franchise.

“Mr. Appliance of San Gabriel Valley will have a personal touch of a locally owned operation,” Feder added. “Give us a try, we have the technology and the experience and we’ll treat you right.”

Why Veterans Should Enter into the Franchise Market

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

When a veteran is leaving the military service or retiring, perhaps the last thing on their mind is buying a franchise. But why not? Veterans are pre-equipped to succeed in the franchise market!

The U.S. military ingrains in each of their disciplined members a set of ordered principles. Veterans have had extensive training in following procedures and systematic rules. They have also already identified their specialty through the Military Occupation Specialty training.

Veterans have access to more advantageous loans, credit and discounted franchise costs. The idea of moving to reach an opportunity does not scare most veterans either, as they are used to traveling.

There are many companies who are willing to facilitate a veteran’s transition, like Recruit Military. The multi-day programs offered to those transitioning out of the military invite speakers from many different brands to come and speak. Another opportunity is to learn entrepreneurship and job-hunting skills.

One of the International Franchise Association’s most successful programs is called VetFran. This program was founded by the late Don Dwyer Sr., founder of The Dwyer Group, to help guide those returning home to what is next in life for them.

When a franchise participates in this, they provide discounts to veterans acquiring a franchise in their company. There is a list of all participating franchise companies on VetFran.com. Nearly 400 franchisors have taken advantage of the program. Since tracking began in 2002, more than 1,700 veterans have purchased a franchise through the program.

A veteran may also find franchise opportunities at events like the West Coast Franchise Expo in November, which offers a Franchising 101 for Veterans session.

With these resources available, veterans may easily see the benefits and advantages to beginning their own franchise.

Why Women Should Feel Confident About Starting Their Own Franchise

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

While it is no secret that beginning your own franchise is challenging, Dina Dwyer-Owens, CEO of The Dwyer Group®, discusses her thoughts on women in the franchise business.

Franchises have a lot of appeal to women. They offer a flexible schedule, perhaps the opportunity to work from home or maybe the chance to go into business with your spouse. Specifically to The Dwyer Group, there are many husband-wife teams in which the women are involved in running the office while the husband is training and inspecting jobs. Some own their own business, keeping in mind that since women are the customers, who better to know what is needed?

But why should women even consider beginning their own franchise? According to Dina, women are naturals when it comes to business. Women are willing to collaborate, organize and hear from a team of people on how to improve.

There are countless women who have founded great franchises, many who have gone unnoticed. “We just can’t ignore that there are great women like Debbi Fields, who started Mrs. Fields® Cookies, one of my favorites. Then there’s Mary Ellen Sheets, a good friend of mine. Her and her daughter, Melanie Bergeron, franchised Two Men and a Truck®. That’s a very nontraditional business for a woman, but you know what? It’s perfect for them because they get what they want from a mover.”

With over 80 industries that are franchising, there are more opportunities to find one geared to a service or product interesting to women. “There are those women who are getting into the very specific-women type businesses. I’ve got some friends who own Young Chefs®. I think women are going toward what attracts them. For some women, it’s not so much that they love plumbing, but they love the idea of making that customer have a wonderful experience with a service provider.”

A great aspect of franchising is that there are businesses to fit all lifestyles. Some, like tutoring or cooking lessons, are more structured for those women who perhaps are looking for that sense of fulfillment or accomplishment during the day when their children are away at school. Others can ask you to devote your day to ensuring the business thrives.

Some words of wisdom from Dina to her female audience:

Think of the opportunities before you anticipate obstacles. There are special programs offered through lending institutions for women getting into business.

One of the most likely hurdles to overcome is the desire to be great at everything; best mother, spouse, business leader. We just have to be happy with letting go or delegating. Try joining IFA, if you are looking for mentorship, where people are so willing to talk and help.

Finally, get clarity about your passions before you get into franchising. Look for what doesn’t feel like work for you. Do your homework, visit the franchise sites and just practice smart business to discover what drives you. It might even be plumbing!
