“Helping customers fulfill their sustainability agenda offers companies an opportunity to build trust and credibility, bringing companies closer to their customers and helping to boost customer loyalty.”
– Report by consulting firm Accenture
In the service industry, empowering customers to be environmentally friendly and in turn save money, can help increase customer loyalty. The Dwyer Group and its seven service franchises pride themselves on customer satisfaction and loyalty, providing do-it-yourself home improvement and maintenance tips in blogs and news articles along with quality on-site service. In fact, “Customer Focus” is one of the four main points of the company Code of Values® that we teach our service professionals.
In honor of Earth Day this Sunday, we’ve compiled a list of environmentally-friendly service tips to help “green” the home environment while conserving the earth’s resources.
Mr. Rooter® Plumbing:
-Look for an environmentally friendly product that reduces drain backups and odors. A chemical-free product, BioChoiceES® displays the Environmental Protection Agency’s Design for the Environment logo. It is a microbial drain cleaner that is naturally occurring and biodegradable.
-Conserve water by maintaining your toilets and checking for leaks. Replace flappers and fill valves every couple of years to avoid a running toilet. A new flapper will seal properly, and a new valve will stop overfilling or filling too slowly.
Rainbow International®
-Look under your kitchen sink and remove toxic products. These household poisonings are one of the highest threats to the health of children. Replace with non-toxic, eco-friendly products.
-To remove a stain from your carpet, mix a solution of one-part vinegar to two-parts water in a clean spray bottle. Let the solution sit on the stain for a while and then wipe with paper towels.
Mr. Appliance®
-If you notice your food cooking unevenly or it is taking longer than before, it may be time to replace cracked or torn oven door seals that can allow up to 20% of heat to escape.
-Give your refrigerator some breathing room by keeping the appliance at least two or three inches away from the wall. Place your refrigerator away from direct sunlight and appliances that produce heat to make your refrigerator run more efficiently.
Mr. Electric®
-Solar energy helps the environment because it reduces the need to burn fossil fuels. That means a correlating drop in air pollution and greenhouse gases.
-Switch from incandescent lights to LED. By changing one light bulb in your home, you minimize wasteful energy expenditure. LED lights last 10 times longer than a regular incandescent bulb, which translates to financial savings for you and better energy efficiency.
Glass Doctor®
-Going green is as easy as fixing your windshield chip! Because auto glass is very difficult to recycle, it’s best to prolong the life of your current windshield. Every time you repair your windshield, you save space in a landfill and reduce your use of plastics.
-Homemade environmentally-friendly glass cleaner recipe: Start by squeezing the juice of one lemon in a clean spray bottle, then fill the bottle with water. Add two drops of natural liquid dish soap or ½ teaspoon of baking soda (this step is to soften the water). Close the bottle and shake well. Spray on the glass and wipe with a lint-free cloth.
Aire Serv®
-Use high-efficiency air filters to help your air conditioning system stay cleaner longer and use less energy to keep cool.
-Plant trees or shrubs to shade the air conditioning unit, but not so close that they block airflow.
Look to The Dwyer Group and its service franchises to provide environmentally friendly homecare tips and make every day “Earth Day.”

One of the greatest fears small business owners must overcome when considering joining a franchise is, What if I lose my current customers? Many mom-and-pop business owners are forced to weigh the benefits of buying a franchise against the costs of re-branding and the potential brand confusion and loss of customer loyalty. A name change is a very involved process, from financial and legal documents to letterhead, marketing materials, and uniforms.
With proper and consistent communication to your existing customers, the good news is that you can bring your longstanding clients along with you to the next stage of your business’s journey. Franchisors have a great arsenal of marketing tools that you can use to inform the community and to get them excited about the coming changes: not just a new logo and colors, but a commitment at the core of your business to keep moving forward.
Take Lee Eppley, for example, owner of The Grounds Guys® of Southeast Charlotte in North Carolina. Eppley had been involved in landscaping for 22 years through his previous company, Final Touch Landscaping and Irrigation, Inc. Upon turning 38 last year, he realized that he had hit a glass ceiling in the very competitive Charlotte market, so he turned to The Grounds Guys as a way to drive forward his business with a national brand name.
To ensure the smooth transition for the re-branding, he followed steps laid out by The Grounds Guys corporate office. He sent out an initial letter to customers, telling them that the change was coming and why. Soon afterwards, their branding switched over from red trucks to white with The Grounds Guys logo on the side, and his crew added The Grounds Guys’ bright yellow uniforms. At the three-month mark, he sent out another round of letters to former, current, and potential customers again in what Eppley calls a “half-time show,” announcing the re-branding. When they reach six months, The Grounds Guys of Southeast Charlotte plans to host their public Grand Opening to attract new customers.
“You need to reinvest in yourself, and with a team of people behind you, you can do it,” says Eppley.
Another individual that recently re-branded his business into a The Grounds Guys franchise is Phil Klemme, owner of The Grounds Guys of Union, Mo. Klemme began working at Platt Nursery and Landscaping in 1983 and purchased the landscaping part of the business in 2004, renaming it Platt Landscaping, LLC. After a poorly performing year in 2011, hit hard by the recession in a county with one of the highest unemployment rates in the state, Klemme decided that once again, a monumental change was needed for the business.
“I felt like I wasn’t able to do my job well, and I didn’t have the marketing support I needed,” said Klemme. After officially signing on with The Grounds Guys in late 2011, Platt Landscaping re-wrapped its trucks in December and held its official grand opening on February 1, 2012. He informed his existing customers of the change through direct mail pieces, door hangers, and through partnerships with the local Chamber of Commerce and community organizations.
Klemme also spread the word through public relations efforts, including an article in the local paper and a radio interview about the brand change. Even though the process had a few bumps along the way, including a short gap between when Klemme’s old website went down and his new one went live, Klemme believes that franchising allows him to have to worry less about “management distractions,” with so much operations support provided by the franchisor.
As a franchise owner, promoting your brand to the community is still a very big job. However, the marketing, operations, and public relations franchise support that companies such as The Dwyer Group® provides allows you to focus your energy on other ways to improve your business plan.
Eppley explains, “When you sign the papers, you are driving the change, but it’s the change that ends up driving you, forcing you to change your business for the better and to use difference resources.” Many franchise owners benefit from implementing new processes such as The Dwyer Group’s frontline program and Code of Values. During Eppley’s transition process, he did say goodbye to a few of his Final Touch Landscaping & Irrigation customers. However, he reports that they were quickly replaced by new customers of The Grounds Guys.

Many people dream of owning their own business. Many dream of working with a company that has strong moral values and a support system in place that will assist them in their business. Franchising with The Dwyer Group offers those systems and a set of values that allows people to feel comfortable, secure, and confident as they make the transition from a small business to franchising.
1. Support System
When a problem comes up in a small business, it isn’t possible to look to competitors for assistance; they won’t divulge solutions since they are competing with you. Through franchising, however, you gain a lifeline of support for problems that may arise in your business.
“They [fellow franchisees] are doing what you do in their business everyday and there’s somebody out there that’s run into the exact same problem that you’re running into. You’re able to get the answers,” Cary Hooper, Rainbow International®, said.
Franchisees of The Dwyer Group’s seven home-service companies have the ability to call fellow franchisees or the corporate office for help to solve these problems. There are a number of knowledgeable people available who have faced the same problems and there are systems in place universal for the entire company.
2. More Freedom
Although the first years of starting a franchise may be time intensive, eventually, your staff will be able to focus on running the labor, allowing you to focus on running the business and freeing up some of your time for family and recreation.
“It took a while for the business to grow where we are today. It seemed when we started, we took on a few more “hats,” but putting the systems to work, finding some key people, and a lot of faith and prayer, we moved forward and today we’re able to take weeks off sometimes, so that’s good,” said Rainbow International franchisees Joy and Kevin Beirne.
3. Brand Recognition
Franchising with The Dwyer Group provides a wide range of brand recognition that small businesses don’t offer. The Dwyer Group name in itself brings years of business excellence, including the current title of one of the best companies to work for in Texas for four straight years, named by Texas Monthly magazine. The Dwyer Group also was recently featured on an episode of the CBS hit reality show “Undercover Boss,” where the company name and values were viewed on a national scale.
“This episode ranks among the most powerful and moving episodes of ‘Undercover Boss,’” said Chris Carlson, executive producer of “Undercover Boss.”
The Dwyer Group also has seven franchise brands under its umbrella. The seven brands include Aire Serv®, Glass Doctor®, The Grounds Guys®, Mr. Appliance®, Mr. Electric®, Mr. Rooter®, and Rainbow International®. These company brands have been at the top of their respective industries for many years and their systems and values have been proven and are paired with The Dwyer Group company values.
“I think that if we become a franchise, we have the years that The Dwyer Group has been doing this with franchising and knowing what to do with those systems. I’ve always been looking for systems,” Gary Fouts said while at future franchisee orientation in Waco, Texas, while considering purchasing a The Grounds Guys franchise.
Franchising with The Dwyer Group allows people’s business and personal goals to become reality. There is a support system in place that allows for sharing of best practices among franchises and the corporate office. Franchising opens doors for more freedom, personally and professionally, and on top of everything else, The Dwyer Group and its seven service franchises provides a solid branding benefit. Dreams of owning your own franchise with a company that holds strong moral and ethical values can become reality franchising with The Dwyer Group.

Mr. Electric- Mr. Electric is an electrical home service provider with impeccable connections. With this franchise, you will be able to provide special electrical services like solar patio lighting, security lighting, custom projects and much more. Opening a Mr. Rooter franchise means that you will have access to important help that will allow you to focus your time on improving efficiencies and performance. Whether an existing business owner or a new one, any one of these franchises can help you take your business to new, impressive heights. Having the support of other franchisees and the invaluable training and resources from the Dwyer Group means adding layers of security and aid that are difficult to find in smaller, non-franchised businesses. Many franchise owners have praised the system, stating that they are able to devote their time to actually running the business and expanding it, rather than simply putting out fires as soon as they spring up.

The Entrepreneurial Carpe Diem
By Laura Shaheen
We could fill this space with the normal platitudes: “There’s no time like the present!” “Time waits for no man!” “Don’t put off on tomorrow what can be done today!” But besides those being irritably cheery, the core message is the same, and it’s one that’s existed since the start of humanity: get going. There are 24 hours in a day, and oftentimes we feel like we’re barely treading water as it is. That is when our real nemesis creeps in. Our worst enemy isn’t our schedule, or a bothersome coworker, it’s the mentality that perhaps, when the time is right, we might start buckling down to making things happen.
That’s the biggest excuse we hear from budding entrepreneurs about starting up their companies. There are a host of others: money issues, age issues, experience and confidence issues, but what all of the issues boil down to is that we live in a nation ruled by procrastination. There will never be a time when all the stars align, when you’re making more money than you’ve dreamed, and you have vast quantities of free time (However, if you do manage this, hats off to you. Perhaps you should look into motivational speaking.) For the rest of us normal folk, entrepreneurship is intimidating and we put it off.
No longer. Check out some of these tips, and get going.
1.) Make the time: We’re all strapped for time. Honestly, sometimes it might seem like you’re pulled thin enough, by work, by your family, by your friends. The point is, however, that everyone you know is in the same boat. Twenty-four hours a day is all we have to make our impression, day after day. You have exactly one lifetime to leave a legacy. In the case of dithering over whether to get into the franchise business, follow the rest of our tips. Make time to research, and then think long and hard about whether the decision is right for you. Learn to prioritize and time-manage. A firm handle on those is like the key to the universe.
2.) Turn struggle into a lesson: It’s tempting to ignore your struggles. It would be so much easier to turn a blind eye to your failures, and to avoid thinking about the mistakes you’ve made coming to the point you’re at this very second. While it’s not healthy to overly dwell on mistakes, neither is it beneficial to simply push them from your mind, time and time again. Learn from your mistakes, and then learn to push them away once you’ve established what you did wrong. As human beings, it’s instinct to make excuses, even to ourselves. Getting past that barrier of lying to oneself is like its own victory in the war of success.
3.) Research until you drop: This point, though down here at number three, is the cornerstone on which this entire article rests. Research. Perhaps opening a franchise isn’t right for you. But without research, you will continue to devote day after day to it in the back of your mind, hemming and hawing as you go over points with no facts to back them up. But perhaps entrepreneurship is the right road. Without making the time to learn, there’s no way that you can move forward. This is procrastination at its most aggressive and damaging. Arming yourself with knowledge can be what defeats the fear, and keeps procrastination at bay. Succeeding in this one aspect is one of the more vital aspects of entrepreneurial victory.
4.) Discover online tools: Though this ties into research, we felt it deserved its own category. There are so many online tools available to the starting business owner. Cloud computing has become big, allowing you and your employees to access files no matter where you are on the globe. Skype can allow you to make international visits face to face, while other social medias keep you connected in a way that would have been unimaginable just ten years ago. There are also online tools to help you cut costs, like online faxing.
5.) Buck up and accept responsibility: Finally, responsibility is what separates the go-getters from the mosey-alongers. Accepting responsibility for yourself, your customers and your employees is what can end up maximizing profits and allowing for growth. It’s easy to glide along on a wave of excuses, and most of the time people won’t even call you out on it. They probably recognize their own shortcomings in your words. “Yes, the economy is bad. I would do the same thing,” they say. However, if you accept responsibility and work through your struggles, you will command respect, something that can never be bought, and you will succeed where countless others have failed. That makes you special. That makes you unique.
Make the time, do your homework and take the reins of responsibility. It’s tough, it’s everyday, and it’s not for everyone, but those, as bluntly as possible, are the qualities that will push you into success.

At first glance, social media looks like a zoo. Between phrases like tweeting and retweeting, Facebook “likes,” and Foursquare “check-ins,” it’s easy to see how many business owners simply take a look and then leave the social networking to someone, anyone else. However, it’s unlikely that you’ve avoided social media completely, and that is a step in the right direction.
Social media experts (both self-proclaimed and the one or two Mark Zuckerbergs out there ) are a dime a dozen, but what they’re saying does have value: embrace social media. It’s here to stay, and where else can you potentially reach 250 million people in one place? When the internet rolled around, a new playground was born and rules changed. The same thing is occurring now, instigated by websites like Facebook and Twitter. With a firm grasp on social networking, your company can quickly not only announce its presence, but it can add something to your client relations that’s impossible to find in a newspaper ad or a television commercial: real, human interaction.
One of the most important and worthwhile things to remember about social media is that there are real people behind the blocks of type. When a customer writes on your company’s page wall to thank you for the service you provided, you get a chance to write back to them and actually interact. That tiny effort, that simple acknowledgement, can do wonders for the good will of your business. If a customer complains on your Facebook wall? Don’t delete it out of hand. Talk to them, figure out the problem, and then try and make reparations. A client you might have lost forever could now be telling all of his friends about how Your Company so quickly addressed his problems. People idly scrolling down the page can see how you treat customers and just like that, more business. Facebook, Twitter and other social medias are powerful tools, and they don’t have to be intimidating. Check out some of these helpful tips for social media and your page will blossom.
1.) Create an account and maintain it. This is one of the most critical steps, and though it may appear self-explanatory, it’s the one that companies most often forget. Once you make your Facebook Page, or create your Twitter account, do not simply leave it there to wallow in the internet wasteland. Assign someone to monitor your social media. Without proper monitoring, you might never even get this wonderful opportunity off the ground. If you’re finding yourself strapped for time and knowledge, consider creating a marketing internship position. College students in the area thrive on social media, and marketing internships are highly coveted and highly sought after. Pretty soon you’ll be weeding out the best of the best from your applicants and setting their minds on improving business for your company.
2.) Create content, don’t merely advertise. One of the reasons that people elect to “like” your page or follow your tweets is that they feel you have something to add to the table. Use this opportunity to inform your fans about things they might not know. Give them a reason to consult your page, and above all else, keep them from regretting they added you.
- a. Creating content
i. Post helpful tips that apply to your customer’s needs. In the yard business? How about some free tips on landscape management?
ii. Make your company human: post pictures of your employees, have interviews with satisfied clients. The more interactive your page is, the longer people will stick around to look at it.
iii. Ask questions, use polls, and get people talking. Make people want to check out your page in the mornings.
3.) Always keep your eyes open for new ways to advertise. With the proliferation of social medias mobbing the internet, Facebook and Twitter aren’t the only options around. This is especially true depending on the typical demographic of your specific clientele. A new contender, Foursquare has hit the market hard, increasing their users from 1 million to 10 million in one year. Foursquare is a check-in application at its heart, and as a company owner, if a user checks in at your location, you can offer them a variety of small discounts while they create buzz with their location being posted on various internet profiles. In addition to Foursquare, other social media platforms are changing the ways that people find businesses.
Overall, social media has proved time and time again that it is here to stay and that it can be an effective and inexpensive way to reach consumers you might never have anticipated. If you have a social media page already, give it a makeover, if you don’t have one, well then, what are you waiting for? New ways to spread your company’s name are being created almost more quickly than companies can keep up with, and that simply is an opportunity that cannot be missed.

Shawn and Andrea Wilson met about 13 years ago in a bar in Collingwood, Ontario. Shawn had just retired from the Navy after more than 10 years of working in naval acoustics. Not long after their meeting in 1997, he joined the Canadian Army for two and a half years as a mechanic, only to be trade-reassigned to the Air Force for about the next seven years to work in air-traffic control as an air defense tech.
“He never would tell me what he really did… He said he would have to kill me,” Andrea said, laughing, of her husband’s multiple employments.
Andrea, described as a “fireplug” by her husband, worked in a bank’s administrative branch for around eight years and quit about a year ago to help run their business. She’s been in customer service since she was 21, a key asset in running their landscaping business.

Their 9-year-old son, Jack, plays hockey and resembles Shawn’s personality, but Andrea’s looks. “He is really, really smart. But I’m biased. He’s my kid,” Andrea said.
Although he is only 9, Jack is more than willing to help. “He’s a bit money-hungry. Any job he can help out with, he does, just to earn money. He’s lucky because I pay him well over minimum wage!” Andrea said.
Just as in many family-run businesses, Shawn has high hopes their franchise will stay in the family. “I’d like to be able to leave my son a little bit of the legacy, maybe have him work beside me, learn more about it and eventually take it over,” Shawn said.
Shawn spent over 20 years in the Canadian military and Andrea worked indoors, directly with customers, so…
How Did They End up in Lawn Management?
They began Greener Pastures about 3 years before Shawn retired from the military, as Shawn felt the need for something to support his pension once he retired. (The name was thought up by Andrea, although Shawn disputes it, only willing to compromise by saying they “collaborated on it.”)
During the first two years in the military, Shawn held a part-time job selling John Deere equipment. “I was selling to landscapers and decided to research it out a bit. Then I decided, ’When I get out, this is what I want to do.’”
A Military Toolkit
“The Navy was like a well-oiled machine, much like The Dwyer Group and The Grounds Guys,” Shawn said.
The military instills many principles and characteristics that are claimed to be the most useful tools in running one’s own business. Among those are self-discipline, desire, will and the ability to face challenges daily.
“You have to be taught these and the military will do that. There are many life-skills I brought with me. I found it was very easy to adapt some of my military life into my business, although sometimes, it doesn’t work too well with employees,” he joked.
“Sometimes, I slip and bark an order, and they stand there and say, ‘We aren’t in the military, you know.’ I catch myself when I do it, for the most part.”
Trouble in Paradise, then Even-Greener Pastures!
About 2 years ago, the third year in business, it began to seem as if they didn’t have time to run the business the way they wanted to.
“We were going after people who were late or behind on payments. It was hard for us to get the money,” Shawn said.
They began to feel like it was taking too long to get quotes out, which is quite time-consuming.
“Once we joined The Grounds Guys and their system, we immediately saw how streamlined and more efficient the business was. It was just that much better for us,” he said.
What truly pulled the Wilsons toward aligning with a brand name was the commercial business. They just weren’t able to break into the commercial jobs in their city; the local businesses wouldn’t let them.
“After about two years on my part in researching which franchise I wanted to buy, I narrowed it down to about two or three,” Shawn said.
That first potential franchise waited too long to call him back. He was already in the midst of signing with The Grounds Guys. Shawn had initially decided to go through the process with the second franchise, until they performed a huge deal-breaker.
“This guy phoned me at 7: 30 in the morning on Saturday, the only day I really and truly have off. He started asking me did I have all the paperwork done, the whole nine-yards. That was when I knew, all he wants is money. He could care
less if the franchise survives. He just wanted the cash,” Shawn said.
After two dead ends, the Wilsons called The Grounds Guys and went to Orangeville for Orientation. “When I left, I knew I wanted to be part of it. I would have been heartbroken if they said no. Right off the bat, it was totally professional. That‘s where I wanted my business to go. That’s where I wanted to be,” Shawn said.
Shawn and Andrea attended Orientation twice. The first time, they didn’t feel as though they had all of their finances in line. The first time, he went down with a promissory note, though Andrea didn’t feel comfortable doing that.
So they took all of their money out of savings and went down about a week later to finish the deal. “Andrea was a little worried at first. I’ve never seen someone do a turnabout as fast as she did. I think she would be a great spokesperson for The Grounds Guys, as much as she likes them,” Shawn said.
The Wilsons were the first Canadian VetFran franchise awarded by The Grounds Guys.
Those van Stralen Boys …
“Orientation was amazing. Everyone was just so positive. You know how most people walk around depressed and miserable? Not them. The brothers have surrounded themselves with lifelong friends and family, always willing to help them in the business. It’s all so family-oriented. They have this amazing outlook about what your life can be,” Andrea gushed.
I teased Andrea that she sounded smitten by the 10 brothers, who she described as “not hard to look at.”
Continuing the joke, I asked Shawn if he was just as smitten by the brothers, jokingly, of course!
Very directly, but will a small inflection of humor, he informed me that no, he wasn’t smitten by them, but it would be hard to say he wasn’t impressed. (Although, while he was saying this, Andrea was yelling, “YES YOU WERE!” and laughing in the background.)
Shawn retorted with a laugh that, “we don’t say that sort of thing when you have been in the military, you know?”
And now …

Andrea said they are now giving the larger companies a pause for thought, those
that wouldn’t leave their contracted construction companies managing their landscape.
“They weren’t even using landscaping companies! Just construction companies who needed to keep their guys and equipment busy in the slow months,” Andrea said.
Because they weren’t a larger, brand-name company, the companies wouldn’t give them a chance.
“North Bay is a bit backwards, like you’re living on the moon. But we’re going to turn the industry on its ear. That’s exactly what is going to happen here,” Andrea said.
Andrea and Shawn are planning a trip to Hawaii soon to renew their vows … And it looks like they’ll have plenty to celebrate.
To review the original e-mail, see below:
Hi Steve,
Shawn said you wanted me to e-mail you about going from being scared out of my wits and putting my life savings into something I really didn’t know anything about, to being amazed and honored to be part of something so great.
When Shawn and I started out on this journey, I was supportive but skeptical. As the months passed and the banks didn’t believe in cashing in our life savings, I became very apprehensive and honestly the night before we were to go to training I wanted to back out. But I had committed to supporting Shawn so down to Orangeville I went.
Then I met the Van Stralen brothers and the team that they’ve surrounded themselves with.
Day one of training: pretty scared. Day two: starting to see the potential. Day three: I took off the life jacket and jumped in with both feet right up to my neck in the excitement of what my life was now going to be.
Now, one month later, I am blown away with what Sunshine/ The Grounds Guys can accomplish. Two months ago, Shawn and I were struggling to keep our company afloat. Now, we are planning a trip to Hawaii to renew our marriage vows.
You can use this testimonial for any non-believers who can’t see the potential in joining our team.
Thanks,
Andrea

First of all, what is a blog?
A blog is a type of journal arranged online in the form of a web page, typically linked or included in the main web page of a site.
There are many types of blogs, but for this, we will focus on differentiating between two: Personal and Business blogs.
Personal blogs can have a vast range of topics, posts and links. They can be personal, opinionative, political, etc.
Business blogs can be an amazing social tool for communicating with customers and employees in order to share knowledge and build a customer following. They are about seeming impersonal while connecting with potential customers and building web traffic on your site.
Another great thing about blogs…They are completely traceable! You can measure your success, your website’s success, your business’ success; the list can go on.
- Why do I want a blog for my small business?
- Superb question! First of all, why not? Blogs are absolutely simple!
- The software is far easier to manage than what it used to be. Beyond that, most small businesses have a Facebook. Included in that profile is a blog! Simply write in it, link your thoughts to resources or further reading, and publish! That blog will be available for all of your friends to see!
- Don’t have a Facebook, and don’t want one?(First of all, shame on you! Free advertising and a way to get customer feedback, free of charge? Don’t pass that up!)
- There are other options, besides Facebook, believe it or not. Blogger.com, Movable Type, Typepad, these all offer simple ways to get started!
- Blogging offers you not only a free to low-cost way to get advertisement, web presence and customer feedback, but it also is an inexpensive alternative to learning html, hiring a web designer.
- Making the commitment to blog at least 2-3 times a week is highly accomplishable for many. Find a topic that relates to your audience. It doesn’t always have to be solely about you! For example, perhaps an electric company wishes to post a blog. A rational topic could be how to cut back on that electricity bill, how to rewire something, the possibilities are endless!
Finally, business blogs allow your small business a chance to get a vast web presence and share your expertise. It can be a powerful tool in gaining customer trust and assurance, while establishing your name!

For many people, landscaping serves to boost up the aesthetic appeal of one’s home to others, particularly when it comes to attracting homeowners or tenants, increasing property values.
Some prefer a simple lawn, requiring little to no care beyond a sprinkler treatment here and there. However, for those who enjoy gardening, pruning, mowing and sprucing their lawn, we hope the following information can be of service!
When asked what Top 5 Tips he would suggest to a client about landscape and lawn care, Frank Myrland of The Grounds Guys Canada, offered up these suggestions:
1) Herbicide can be dangerous to the environment and your soil. Horticultural Vinegar, an organic alternative, is quite different from the regular vinegar that you’ll find in the kitchen.
Cooking vinegar contains no more than 5% acetic acid, which makes it harmless to weeds for the most part. Horticultural Vinegar contains more acetic acid, which allows it to penetrate into the root system of weeds and kill them.
Horticultural Vinegar can still damage grasses and flowers, however, so it must be used cautiously so that there isn’t any collateral damage. Take care to spray with direction, and pay close attention to a potential runoff into other plants. You can find Horticultural Vinegars available with different strengths.
Remember that since it contains acid, it can be dangerous if handled incorrectly. If you decide to use Horticultural Vinegar, make sure you read the label first.
2) Do you have grand visions of what your yard could be this summer? Do you dream of vibrant gardens with neatly edged garden beds, perfectly pruned hedges? Where do you start?
When we start gardening or landscaping, many of us forget the importance of planning ahead. Buying flowers and equipment without taking to time to figure things out first certainly could work out, but who really wants to take that chance?
Make good use of the information available. Internet resources or employees of local garden centers can help you figure out how to fill out your garden. You can talk to landscaping service companies as well if you are looking for the best possible end result.
Take note of the space you have to work with. Plan out where your new landscape features or objects will go. Set a deadline for finishing planting so you don’t keep putting it off. Set a schedule for watering, raking, edging or maintaining your gardens. Remember that spending half-an-hour to construct a good plan now can save you hours of work trying to salvage your garden later on.
3) Any time is a good time to sharpen your lawn mower blades. This is a job that some of us find easy to put off, but the effect of dull blades can quickly be seen on a lawn. A ragged, uneven cut isn’t the first thing you want visitors to be greeted with at your house.
There are many different gardening centers and hardware stores that will sharpen your lawn mower blades. Take the time to get it done and you will be glad you did later!
4) Plants grow and die, depending on the season they are most compatible with, as well as their life span. Be sure that when you plan your garden, each flower, bush or tree works best with the upcoming season.
For less maintenance, go for a perennial plant. Typically, these grow and bloom over the spring and summer, then die back each autumn and winter. They also live typically for more than two years, which makes less of a hassle to replant so often.
5) Have you ever considered a backyard pond? Building your own pond, or having a landscape crew build one for you, is something you may never have considered before. There are many reasons why you might want to take the time to think about it now.
With a vibrant looking design and well-manicured surrounding landscape, a backyard pond adds a touch of beauty. A pond will attract birds, butterflies and crickets and can be filled with fish. It obviously depends on size, but most ponds don’t take very long to make at all. You can do it yourself if you fancy yourself to be a clever landscaper. Simply use a tarp to line the pond and a hose and pump to supply the water.
You can also hire a landscaping company to do it for you, to ensure that the job is done professionally and exactly how you want it. If you haven’t spent any time thinking about what a backyard pond would add to your property, now is the time.
