The Franchise Run Down

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

By Laura Shaheen

Despite today’s downturned economy, or perhaps because of it, more and more business owners are discovering the secret of stability and prosperity: franchising. Franchising, though not for all businesses, is an ideal way to grow your company. Franchising allows for the duplication of successful business plans and then applies them directly to your own business. Through the aid and support from the Dwyer Group, you as an owner can spend less time bogged down in the time-consuming minutia of daily business life and can apply yourself to improvement and expansion.

The Dwyer Group is comprised of 7 potential concepts that you might be interested in operating. One of the greatest benefits of working with the Dwyer Group is that you can either convert your existing business into a successful franchise, or you can start from scratch and build your franchise from the ground up. This flexibility allows you the freedom to run your company, while also having support when you require it. Between the Dwyer Group’s proven business plans and excellent training opportunities, becoming a franchisee means starting out ahead and with more connections that you could previously dream.

There are 7 potential franchises that encompass the Dwyer Group, and each one has its own unique benefits and is recession-resistant.

Rainbow International- Rainbow International is in the smoke, fire and water restoration industry. This industry is both recession-resistant and profitable. In addition to those basic services, Rainbow International also offers mold removal services, biohazard clean up and commercial services. With a Rainbow Franchise, you will receive full training and support, and will receive help from our national accounts and marketing team in order to help you get the optimal number of jobs for your business.

Glass Doctor- Not only is Glass Doctor the largest fully franchised residential, business and auto glass franchise company in the U.S. and Canada, they also have the ability to make your existing glass company skyrocket. With a Glass Doctor franchise, you will have access to experts in specialty glass services that can drastically increase your client base. Through a franchise with the Dwyer Group, you will have access to discounts and rebates on all that you need to run your company, and access to special, proven business systems that will streamline your company and maximize results.

Aire Serv- Aire Serv is a leader in the heating and air conditioning industry, an industry that is both competitive, profitable and always necessary. By opening an Aire Serv franchise, you can learn how to increase profitability, have access to our cutting-edge research and learn to expand your existing company into something much greater. With over 175 locations worldwide, there are hundreds of franchise owners in a support system, as well as the entire Dwyer Group team, who will provide help and information on running a successful business.

Mr. Appliance- Mr. Appliance is the largest fully franchised appliance repair company in the world. By opening a Mr. Appliance franchise, you are getting the chance to benefit from fifteen years worth of experience in servicing high-end appliances and operating successful businesses.  The industry is both dynamic and competitive, and many people previously owning appliance repair services have made the switch to a Mr. Appliance franchise and seen their companies really take off.

Mr. Electric- Mr. Electric is an electrical home service provider with impeccable connections. Already the official electrical home installation partner of the Home Depot, this powerful alliance has helped our franchise owners become leaders in the industry. With this franchise, you will be able to provide special electrical services like solar patio lighting, security lighting, custom projects and much more. As a franchise owner in such a successful business, you will be allowed the freedom of running your own business with the security of support from other franchise owners and headquarters just a phone call away.

Mr. Rooter- A leader in the plumbing industry, Mr. Rooter allows you to build a successful franchise due in part to the training and business services you will receive on your induction into the franchise family. With a long, illustrious history, Mr. Rooter was founded in 1974 and has grown to over 300 franchise locations across the United States, Canada and Europe. Opening a Mr. Rooter franchise means that you will have access to important help that will allow you to focus your time on improving efficiencies and performance. As always, being a part of one of the Dwyer Group’s franchises also means that you will receive the immense discounts and rebates available through the Dwyer Group’s many connections.

The Grounds Guys- The newest franchise opportunity in the grounds and lawn care industry, The Grounds Guys franchise comes with all of the systems, training, support and tools to become a fully profitable and competitive franchise. With all franchise territories in the United States open, opening a franchise has never been more accessible. Regardless of your experience, you will receive top of the line training  and you can focus on streamlining your business to maximize profitability.

Whether an existing business owner or a new one, any one of these franchises can help you take your business to new, impressive heights. Having the support of other franchisees and the invaluable training and resources from the Dwyer Group means adding layers of security and aid that are difficult to find in smaller, non-franchised businesses. Many franchise owners have praised the system, stating that they are able to devote their time to actually running the business and expanding it, rather than simply putting out fires as soon as they spring up.

Home Energy Efficiency- What Can Mr. Electric Do for You?

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Besides being a fabulous color, green symbolizes eco-friendly options to living life. More and more often, consumers are making the change to upgrade their homes to be energy-efficient. Not only is “going green” helpful in saving money, but it also helps you to save the environment from toxic fossil fuels and their pollutants.

The tough truth is: everything we do has an impact on the planet, good or bad. Because consumers know that they have the power to control their choices, the idea of global impact is becoming clearer. From where they live to what they use to light their homes, people have the power to make a difference.

YOU have the power to make things better!

The cost of electricity, alone, is enough to make someone consider “going green” in electricity. The cost, both in dollars and environmental impact, shows no sign of going anywhere but up. With half of the American energy grid being coal-generated, our carbon footprint is in dire need of reduction. The great thing about people nowadays is that they know this! Education is everywhere. Now, all that is needed is a Mr. Electric franchise to install homes with the appropriate energy-saving devices!

So here is the “so what” for those looking to start a franchise:

Americans KNOW they need to reduce their carbon footprint and WANT to lessen their electricity bill.

Mr. Electric offers opportunities to service that need, to bring the public what they want.

  • Lighting retrofit technology which provides a way to lessen the typical consumption and cost of energy for homes and businesses.
  • Solar installment on your home or business provides economical and environmental solutions to our global situation. It is offered in three ways: Stand-alone, grid-connected and back-up.
    • The first is a system for those who do not have access to utility supplied power. Extra energy can be stored in a battery to be used when there is no sunshine to be turned into energy.
    • Grid-connected, the most common type of solar energy, has a battery back-up and electrical grid back-up in case there is a need.
    • Back-up systems are best for areas with unreliable grid power or frequent power outages.
  • Mr. Electric is also partnering with installers for car charging stations. There will be three types of stations offered: low-wattage, for a charge of over 12 hours, to be used domestically; medium-wattage, for 1-2 hour charges, perhaps at malls and grocery stores; and high-wattage chargers for 15 minutes, to be used at convenience stores or gas stations.

Mr. Electric has the power to make things better, namely your electric business or life, whether you are a franchisee or customer!

Mr. Electric-Ft. Lauderdale helps light up a Ronald McDonald House

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Thanks to a partnership with the Green Savings Company, The Ronald McDonald House in Fort Lauderdale will receive more than 100 energy-efficient lighting kits, which are being installed over the next few weeks.

The Green Savings Company initiated the partnership as a way to reach out to the local community and also promote its T5 retrofit lighting kit, a light conversion system designed to save energy and reduce costs.

“This is definitely something that we really needed,” said Soraya Moya, executive director of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida. “We’re very grateful to them.”

The Ronald McDonald House in Fort Lauderdale is a residence for families with critically ill children staying in nearby hospitals. With more efficient and improved lightning, the facility can remove excess lamps and will count down on the number of light bulbs needed.

The new fixture kits can reduce costs up to 70 to 80 percent, according to Alex Vidal, marketing director for the Green Savings Company. The kits are the flagship product of the company, which opened in Fort Lauderdale two years ago.

“It’s an inexpensive way for them to go green and reduce their carbon foot print without having to spend a lot of money because it’s a cost efficient method,” Vidal said.

Another aspect of the partnership is Mr. Electric, which offered to install the kits. Mr. Electric removed T12 and T8 fluorescent light bulbs and replaced them with the T5 retrofit kits, which is one of the more energy efficient bulbs on the market.

And with a monthly electric bill of roughly $2,100, the potential savings for the Ronald McDonald House could not come at a better time.

“Everyone is hurting with the economy and we’re very appreciative of our relationship with them,” Moya said. “It’s less of a burden on us and the families that stay here for one, two or three months.”

The potential savings could also generate more funding to improve programs as well as purchase needed furniture and other items.

“The more we save, the better we’ll be able to operate and branch out,” Moya said.

Risk, Reward and Success

How a Young, Local Business Succeeds in Today’s Economy

Locals Doug and Darla Thornton admit the decision they made to start a Mr. Electric franchise two years ago was a “big-time risk.”

In the midst of 2008’s turbulent economic times, Doug Thornton made a career move from country music management to owning his own business.

He knew the economy was tough when he started. But “in any economy,” Thornton said, “giving the quality is far more important and will be remembered much more than the price.”

Reward has followed the Thorntons’ risk. Their local business is recognized as Top Gun by Mr. Electric: it’s performed in the top 10 percent of the nationwide electrical service company’s 180 franchises.

Franchisees score points in the annual competition measured by their retail sales, per capita sales, year end financial statements, attendance at corporate events and gross profits.

Darla compared entering the unfamiliar electric business to learning a new language.

Before he bought the franchise, Doug Thornton said his electrical experience was “limited to changing a light bulb.”

This is where Mr. Electric’s franchise support from came in.

“Because we knew nothing,” Doug said, “the only way we knew how to do things was by the system,” referring to the methodology and guidelines Mr. Electric prescribes for business owners.

“Doug’s ability to follow the system has helped him in every facet of his business,” said Mr. Electric Marketing Specialist Mike Weaver. “Our successful franchisees are the ones who follow every part of the system. He’s also done a great job of communicating with us, which is crucial.”

Support and credibility from Mr. Electric and its parent company, The Dwyer Group, appealed to the Thorntons. But when they visited the corporate headquarters in Waco, it was The Dwyer Group’s code of values that made the biggest impression.

The code is based on respect, integrity, customer-focus and having fun in the process. According to Dwyer Group CEO Dina Dwyer-Owens, the Code is responsible for the company’s success. “It’s more than words on a card,” Dwyer-Owens says on The Dwyer Group website, “It’s a road map for the company.”

Doug Thornton’s favorite value reads “We believe our creator put us on this earth to succeed. We will accept our daily successes humbly, knowing a higher power is guiding us.”

Thornton has the words posted on his office wall.

The Thorntons have had their hands full with the franchise. Doug handles the marketing and strategy, and Darla deals with their service professionals and customer service. “All of us – me, Doug, our service professionals – we’re like a big family,” Darla said.

Though he turned a risky situation into a success, Doug remains humble. “Our survival has been a result primarily of the system, help from many other franchise owners – and an answer to daily prayer,” Doug said.

A Mr. Electric Franchise’s Service Sparks Another Positive Review

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

A recent e-mail from a pleased Mr. Electric customer proves that we follow our Code of Values. Our polished system guarantees actions that leave a positive impression on our customers.

“The work was well done and definitely customer focused,” said Linda Goetz, customer of Ross Kostron in Regina, SK, Canada.

Goetz sought an initial quote from Mr. Electric and was greatly impressed with the business card and Code of Values she received.

“It is because of that code that I decided to call Mr. Electric to have the work done in my home,” wrote Goetz.

Once the service professional from Mr. Electric, Cody Andris, arrived at her home to do the job, Goetz immediately took note of his professionalism, courtesy and respect for her property.

“Many businesses have codes of conduct or values written on their cards,” wrote Goetz, “however, I found Cody, the gentleman who came to do the work, putting those values into practice.”

Goetz went out her way to send an e-mail to the Regina franchise owner, Ross Kostron, thanking him for a such an incredible job.

“It is important to compliment good service and, as a client, I am trying to ensure that I do take those opportunities to say, ‘Well done!” I would recommend your company to others,” concluded Goetz.

Delivering superior service is just one of the ways we are leading the service industry!

Mr. Electric Gets a Glowing Review!

Monday, September 13th, 2010

One of the greatest compliments a Dwyer Group franchisee and their company can receive is a satisfied customer. It’s an added bonus when that customer sings our praises through her community of mothers and house-owners, in order to ensure they receive the same fantastic service.

Below is an excerpt from a website called Regina Moms, where topics range from contractors to how-to’s on getting the most for your money. The Dwyer Group is proud to post this and even more proud of its valued employee, Mitchell Lazorko.

“We are so, so, so impressed with Mr. Electric so far! I was booked for someone to come on Thursday between 1-2. I ended up getting in for a massage on a cancellation for 2pm, so I called to see if I should reschedule or if whoever was coming could be here closer to 1. First of all, the receptionist is fantastic and super friendly. She told me she could have someone here in 1/2 hour. She then called me back to tell me who would be coming and that he was just leaving the shop and would be arriving shortly. Who does that???? I was impressed right away.

Mitchell showed up shortly after and was just great. He was very friendly and he even had a coloring book for Ava . She was over the moon. He had a little door mat, put covers over his shoes…I was in shock. We’ve been dealing with a lot of difference companies and contractors over the past few weeks and NO ONE has done that.

The quote ended up being close to another but we WILL be going with Mr. Electric hands down without giving anyone a second thought. My husband came home at lunch because it was Olivia’s first day of school and was able to talk to Mitchell as well. He just said, “We’re going with them no matter what”.

So there is the feedback to date. Please pass on our compliments to your husband and his staff.

I’m sure the work that is being done will be done well, too.
Mitch is booked in today and is doing the job as I type this!”

Mr. Electric strives for professionalism and perfection in its service to its residential and commercial customers. Each company ensures that the job is done correctly the first time and that they treat the family and property with the utmost respect and attention. In short, they have the power to make things better!

Expecting the Unexpected

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Snowfall at The Dwyer Group in Waco, Texas. It’s nothing compared to what people in the Northeast received earlier this year, but Waco received a big snowfall today. Roads closed. Schools closed. It disrupted the normal course of business. This kind of thing happens almost every day in places like Minneapolis and Toronto. But for us in Texas, it’s quite unexpected.

Is your business prepared for the unexpected? What if you’re sick for an extended period of time? One of your service trucks goes down. Do you have the systems and support in place to push on in the face of the unexpected?

Don’t let life’s unexpected problems cause big trouble for your business. Get the systems. Get a plan together. Prepare for the sunny days and the snowy days. It will bring you peace of mind and a more successful future.

10 Ways Franchising Can Make Your Life Easier

Friday, February 19th, 2010

1. Learning From Experience.  Leading the Service Industry is about systems. We’ve developed these systems after years of experience in the field with customers. The “front line” of home service. This experience and expertise is immediately at your fingertips. Your franchise coach and other franchise owners are there to help you navigate through day-to-day business with ease.

2. Brand recognition.  Your company has a recognizable and respected brand. Years of marketing, national exposure and a history of quality instantly make your business the most trusted service brand in town.

3. Help with Business Functions.  Do you know your numbers? Do you know exactly how efficient (or inefficient) your business is operating? Your franchise coach and a team of small business experts are only a phone call or e-mail away. And they’re working every day of the year to research the industry to keep all of our franchise owners on the cutting edge of home service.

4. Training. The cornerstone of a solid business starts with the right training. After becoming a franchisee, you will be part of a world-class initial training course. And throughout the year, there are ongoing training meetings that are regional, online or on-site at your location. We can help you stay ahead of the changing marketplace.

5. High Success Rate.  We succeed when you succeed. Year after year, studies and surveys prove franchise businesses have a much higher success rate than independent businesses. That’s because with a franchise, you have a full support team, advice from other franchise owners and much more purchasing power (more on that later).

6. Cross Marketing.  You’re not alone in your local market. Because of the different concepts in our franchise network, your customers now have a hometown service team. You can partner with other franchise owners in your market to create a home service powerhouse.

7. Purchasing Power. Buy more. Pay less. It’s simple. Leading the Service Industry partners you with other franchise owners to deliver the best materials for the lowest prices. With so many franchisees, we have negotiated great rates on everything you need to run your business. Discounts and rebates on your favorites – vehicles, insurance, tools, parts, supplies, marketing materials and more. We want to make sure you don’t waste a penny.

8. Improve Your System.  Time is money. And fuel is money. Don’t waste anything. Our systems and use of technology can help your company run more efficiently so your technicians aren’t wasting valuable time on service calls. We can help you find the best customers, deliver fast, quality service and be on the cutting edge.

9. Networking.  Leading the Service Industry is made up of more than 1,500 franchise owners – their expertise and experience are at your service. Regional meetings and our annual Reunion (in June in San Antonio this year) are a great place to exchange ideas and improve your operations.

10. Prepare for Future Competition.  With a stronger, more solid foundation, your company will be well represented in your local market. We’re working every day to help you succeed.
