Mr. Rooter in Pittsburgh Helps Save Baby Ducks

PITTSBURGH (July 27, 2009) – A Pittsburgh plumber’s caring nature saved seven baby ducks that were stuck in a storm drain.

George Jessup, a commercial service technician at Mr. Rooter® Plumbing of Pittsburgh franchise, was driving down the road in Shaler Township when he noticed a duck sitting on a storm drain. Something just didn’t seem right, so he pulled over.

“The duck wouldn’t move, and it peaked my curiosity,” Jessup said. “It looked out of place, and it had me wondering what it was doing.”

When the plumber looked down the drain and saw little ducklings, it all made sense. Realizing the mother duck was worried, Jessup knew he had to rescue her babies.

After unsuccessful attempts to open the heavy drain, Jessup called the fire department and police. Within 30 minutes of their rescue efforts, they were able to safely get seven ducklings out.

“They were the cutest things you ever saw,” Jessup said. “I’m so glad we were able to save them.”

To make sure no baby ducks were left in the drain, this plumber sent a video inspection camera down the pipe. Unfortunately, the pipe was too full of debris to see much.

The fire department then stepped in, and flushed the pipe with water. With no signs of any ducklings, Jessup packed up and went back to work.

“People are calling me a hero, but I’m really not,” Jessup said. “I just wanted to return the baby ducks to their mother.”
