Paul and Saunda Kitchen - Santa Rosa, California
Paul and Saunda Kitchen are only in their 30s, but they have the wisdom of plumbers much older. They’ve created a positive work environment that encourages their team to grow and succeed while taking care of their customers.
But the Kitchens don’t stop with just their shop; they are leaders, mentors and role models for the entire Mr. Rooter network. Paul serves on the Mr. Rooter advisory council, and Saunda started a fund that helps franchisees with travel expenses to annual conferences.
The Mr. Rooter Corporation has recognized this dynamic duo with the Franchisee of the Year, Sales Leader of the Year and Excellence in Leadership awards. They were recently named to the ‘Forty Under 40’ list of professionals in their community.
Why did you invest in a Mr. Rooter franchise?
We were amazed at the camaraderie the Mr. Rooter franchisees shared, and we immediately wanted to be a part of it. We wanted to want to come to work. Having fun at work and being a part of something bigger than you is so rewarding. Owning a Mr. Rooter franchise lets us be in business for ourselves but not by ourselves.
How have you grown your business?
When we first started we thought we would cap out at five trucks, but we now have a 22-vehicle fleet with more than 30 team members. We attribute the growth to the positive work culture we created. We constantly train our team on technical aspects as well as personal development, including goal setting, balancing work and home life, among many other topics.
What impact does the Mr. Rooter brand have on your business?
It has a phenomenal impact. Our business is at the level it is because of the education and technology Mr. Rooter provides. Mr. Rooter is a well-known and well-respected brand in our community.
How have your lives and business changed since you became a Mr. Rooter franchisee?
We’ve surrounded ourselves with the fantastic network of fellow Mr. Rooter franchisees. Being affiliated with such a dynamic group allows us to break goals we didn’t know we were capable of setting in the first place. We learned to work on the business - not in it.
