Rick Joy - Naples, Florida

By the time Rick Joy was 16 years old he was good at cleaning drains, a trade he learned from his father. Rick didn’t have a driver’s license, so his father hired a retired man to drive him to service calls.

Rick now owns a 12-truck operation, earning him Top Gun status, which goes to the top tier of Mr. Rooter franchisees. Rick has been in this elite group of franchisees multiple times.

Why did you invest in a Mr. Rooter franchise?
I owned a franchise from a competitor plumbing company for 11 years. I had just sold it when I met Don Dwyer, the late founder of The Dwyer Group, the holding company of Mr. Rooter. Don told me he was going to build the best plumbing service business in the United States, and I believed him. That was 1989.

After 18 years with Mr. Rooter I believe Don was correct. I think Mr. Rooter has influenced the plumbing industry in a very positive way. The better we get the more improvement I see from my competitors. Improved service standards and quality are good for customers in general, regardless of which plumber they use. I think Mr. Rooter helped raise the bar. 

What is the biggest benefit of owning and operating a Mr. Rooter franchise?
The biggest benefit of having a Mr. Rooter franchise is the training you receive on how to become a good business person. Just because you can turn a wrench does not mean you can run a successful plumbing business. It’s also beneficial to have the support and camaraderie of more than 250 other franchisees within the Mr. Rooter system.

How is your Mr. Rooter shop different from the other plumbing shop you owned?
Mr. Rooter is the only reason I’m sitting behind a desk running an operation and not in a truck doing service calls. Owning a Mr. Rooter franchise enables me to have more free time, and my wife and I enjoy spending it with our grandkids and daughters. I get to see my grandkids once or twice a week, and I have fun spoiling them.

What do you see in the future for your franchise?
 My goal is to have a 20-truck operation. It's only a few years away. We just added two counties to our service area, and with the support of Mr. Rooter everything is falling into place perfectly.
