Drip, Drip…Wait - I’m Wasting How Much Water?

Find Out Using the Mr. Rooter® Plumbing Online Drip Calculator

Waco, Texas (March 16, 2011) – More than 1 trillion gallons of water leak from U.S. homes each year, and Mr. Rooter Plumbing is doing its part to help lower the amount of wasted water.

In conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Fix a Leak Week” March 14-20, Mr. Rooter Plumbing encourages homeowners to use its online drip calculator.

Based on the number of drips per minute, it immediately calculates the amount of water wasted daily, monthly and yearly. The results are staggering.

“The drip calculator puts the amount of water you’re wasting into perspective,” said Mary Kennedy Thompson, president of Mr. Rooter Corporation. “It’s an easy-to-use resource that helps us educate people on the reality of water leaks.”

According to the EPA WaterSense website, the average American home can waste more than 10,000 gallons of water in a year because of running toilets, dripping faucets and other household leaks.

To get an idea of how much water you’re wasting, use the Mr. Rooter online drip calculator at http://www.mrrooter.com/AskTheExpert/Drip%20Calculator.aspx. To give you a sneak peek, if a faucet drips just once a minute, it is wasting more than 52 gallons of water a year.

“Fixing leaky faucets does more than just save water,” Thompson said. “It also saves homeowners money by lowering their water bills, which can really make a difference in this economy.”

While leaky faucets are noticeable, that’s not always the case with toilet leaks. But Mr. Rooter Plumbing has a nifty tip to find out when a toilet is silently leaking water.

Put several drops of dark food coloring into the toilet tank. If dye appears in the toilet bowl, it’s leaking. The problem could be the fill valve or flapper at the bottom of the tank.

Mr. Rooter Plumbing recommends wrapping an old towel around the base of toilet before starting this test. This will ensure the dye doesn’t stain flooring if there is a leak.
