Local Business Reaches Out to Ronald McDonald House Charities®

Waco, Texas (October 13, 2010)– Glen Swallow, owner of Mr. Appliance® of Salt Lake and Tooele does more than fix refrigerators; he fills them up with food, too! Swallow and his family of 10 donated store bought goods to their local Ronald McDonald House Charities in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Each of Swallow’s eight children saved up their allowances and bought items like fresh fruit and milk and hand delivered and stocked the RMHC fridge with goods to support families in their time of need.

“It was great for my children to personally give something,” Swallow said. “It made them each feel like they could make a difference in someone’s life.”

Swallow has actively been involved in the Salt Lake City RMHC by donating his time and resources as an expert appliance repair business of Salt Lake and Tooele counties. Recently, Swallow’s master technician, Jayson, repaired a broken dishwasher to give the local RMHC peace about having clean dishes for families staying at the house. 

“The Ronald McDonald House® program provides a ‘home-away-from-home’ for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost to families,” said Jennifer Smith, senior director of Communications and Special Programs, RMHC. “Our Houses are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on healing their child- not where they can afford to stay or where they will get their next meal.”

Swallow is quick to offer assistance to RMHC because he has a connection to the purpose of the organization that goes deeper than his expert appliance repair business. In 1998, the Swallow’s oldest son, Tyson was hit by a car while riding his bike. The hospital was two and half-hours away from where they lived and if it had not been for family who lived nearby, they would have been buried in hotel expenses.

“We realized at that time how difficult it is to deal with a seriously injured family member and could not imagine not having a place to stay without incurring a huge expense at a hotel,” Swallow said. “Through its Ronald McDonald House program, RMHC provides a place for families in need at a very difficult time in their life and for that, I am so glad that Mr. Appliance is a sponsor of Ronald McDonald House Charities.”

Swallow and his Mr. Appliance of Salt Lake and Tooele team are proud of their partnership with RMHC and they look forward to continue to provide support and strength to families in their time of need.
